Thyroid hormone replacement is commonly prescribed for individuals with low thyroid function. The two main forms are levothyroxine (T4) and liothyronine (T3). These hormones are very effective when taken properly, but they are also sensitive substances. If taken incorrectly, their absorption can be reduced, lowering their effectiveness.
Why Timing and Method Matter?
Thyroid hormones can easily interact with food, coffee, calcium, iron, and many supplements. These interactions block absorption, meaning your body does not get the full benefit of the medication. For this reason, the timing of when and how you take your thyroid hormone is extremely important.
How to Take Thyroid Hormone
- Take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
- Use plain water only — no coffee, juice, or milk.
- Wait at least 30 minutes before eating breakfast or taking other supplements/medications.
A simple routine can make this easier:
- Keep your thyroid hormone by your bedside.
- As soon as you wake up, take your dose with a glass of plain water.
- Continue with your morning routine (shower, getting dressed, etc.).
- By the time you have breakfast, usually 30 minutes will have passed.
- You can then eat and take other supplements without worrying about reduced absorption.
Note:
Consistency is key. Taking your thyroid hormone around the same time each day, in the same way, ensures stable hormone levels and the best results for your health.
If you are taking desiccated thyroid, you may follow the same method or according to the instruction on the label. Do not chew, crush, or dissolve the tablet in the water.
